Legend: top graph of each pair is motor speed V (i.e., edot), bottom is load. Top graph is the one to pay attention to. Translate V to edot thus: V0.05 ≈ 3e-8/s. Horizontal scale is time. 5000 pts ≈ 14 hrs. | ||

e = 0.0627 | End step (3), approx 1030 hrs 1/23. Rebound measurements underway, then out it comes. We'll put it into LN storage just like 566. Not sure what that stress rise at the end of the run was, will check with the operator... |
![]() |
e = 0.0590 | Thurs 1/22, ~2130, start of step (3) with s raised from 25 to 30 MPa, with no unloading after step (2). Will probably end this run Fri morning. Too many other runs backed up on the runway. |
![]() |
e = 0.0532 | Thurs am, 1/22, end of step (2), will proceed directly to step (3) without unload. Change in edot over the past 24 hrs is very hard to see |

e = 0.0500 | Weds am, 1/21. 100:1 gears, edot now ~5e-8/s. Plan to run this 24 hrs more, then increase to 30 MPa and finish quickly tomorrow. |
![]() |
e = 0.044 | LN line replaced. Start of step (2). T is now 20 K higher, but s is ~20% lower than in previous step. This is with 10:1 gearing, so edot at the most recent point was ~3e-7/s, pretty fast. Still hardening for sure, but it is acting awfully mobile. Time will tell, as will the application of 30 MPa, to be done in the next step.

e = 0.0306 | End of step (1b), ~1600 hrs 1/19. Ended prematurely when LN transfer line started leaking badly. Message is clear enough I think--significant strain enhancement with load cycling, and borderline mobility. Will try to get the line repaired Tues a.m. and proceed with step (2) at 243 K. |
![]() |
e ≈ 0.0298 | As of ~0700 hrs 1/19. Start step (1b). A huge strain enhancement effect, 0.005 strain and still moving ~3x faster than end of step (1a). Might be what you'd expect from borderline mobility. I wonder what T effect might be. Plan for step (2) eventually is to change to 243 K. |
![]() |
e ≈ 0.0255 | End of step (1a). edot very low, ~1e-8/s. Looks like 2% above max dry packing might still be immobile. It would take a couple of weeks at this rate to know for sure. |

e ≈ 0.0255 | |
![]() |
e = 0.025 | 100:1 gears now in. Big swings are the result of an undercooling followed by an overcooling, both by about 2 K. Little actual effect on sample, despite what it shows here (I can explain). Biggest problem is that it took ~12 hrs to settle down so we could see what edot really was. |
![]() |
e = 0.023 | Classic start. Control could have been better, but that's of little consequence. 10:1 gearing in this instance, so edot is 10x higher than translation formula at the top says. Got started late Fri 1/16; a few hardware issues delayed the start
